Strategy Execution is the discipline of successfully implementing a strategic plan.
Strategy Execution is the discipline of successfully implementing a strategic plan. However, at least two-thirds of organizations struggle to implement their strategy and almost half of middle managers who are responsible for executing the strategy don’t know what that strategy is, how to articulate it, or how their day-to-day correlates with strategic priorities. What’s worse is that employees often have no exposure or perceived connection at all to corporate strategy or priorities.
Today, Strategy Execution is a continuous and iterative process to be able to respond quickly to the accelerating pace of change. The concept of agility is moving from software to other processes and it is a highly effective way to drive strategy execution.
No matter what framework or tool you use to drive strategy execution (e.g. Management by Objectives, Balanced Scorecard, Gazelles One-Page-Strategic-Plan, Lean Hoshin Kanri, or OKRs) the following steps are essential to successfully propel execution:
- Develop and visualize the strategic plan with real and relevant goals, initiatives, and measures.
- Set up accountability so that every goal, initiative and measure has an owner.
- Align the organization by cascading the strategic plan down through all levels of the company.
- Communicate the plan to ensure that the strategy and goals are well understood by everyone.
- Take action and transform plans and goals into results.
- Measure results.
- Report progress through all levels up to the leadership team.
Review and adjust the strategic plan continuously as required.
